Breaking Ground on a Ground Breaking Design at SFSU

Cranes and construction fences have popped up at the corner of Valera and Holloway Avenue near SFSU where the new Holloway Avenue Student Housing and Mixed Use Building broke ground, December 3, 2018. APDW has been working with Gould Evans Architecture on a new landscape and building that “stitches” together the surrounding neighborhood with the existing and future revitalization of Holloway Avenue. Sustainable landscape elements are at the core of the design. A native drought tolerant plant palette and recycled irrigation will conserve water and create a landscape that is beautiful and sustainable. Surfaces and furnishings were selected for their eco-footprints, life cycle operations, and style.  Smart planting and responsible materials contribute towards the project’s goal of LEED Gold Certification by following San Francisco State University’s Landscape Framework + Forest Management Plan.

The new student housing building and streetscape celebrates a new campus gateway where Holloway meets 19th Avenue. Rather than level the site, the design team has embraced the existing grade change on the block and created a series of outdoor areas that flow through the project. The social connections across multiple levels merge the spaces of the street, amphitheater, courtyard, and interiors. Students, faculty, and the public have numerous opportunities to bump into acquaintances and meet new people within this memorable new gateway for the SFSU Campus.

The project is the University’s first delivery of a Public Private Partnership, and the design team is proud to partner with the development team of Pacific Union Development Co. and American Campus Communities. We can’t wait until these shovels are planting trees! We are looking forward to seeing our design take shape between now and the spring of 2020.
