Mission YMCA Edible Garden wins ASLA NCC Award

APDW’s Mission YMCA Edible Garden won a Merit Award in General Design from the Northern California Chapter of the ASLA in 2016. Congratulations APDW Team! We’d like to thank the YMCA, JKT Associates and Zynga.org for realizing this terrific garden.

The Mission YMCA edible garden, located in San Francisco CA, is the product of six months collaborative efforts of Zynga.org, the Mission Y staff and community members, and APDW to transform an unused, overgrown, inaccessible hillside into a productive and sustainable edible garden.

And after!

The garden provides a place for Mission Y members, community and staff to come together in the experience of growing food and engaging with nature. The garden design provides areas for children to play and learn, planting beds for teens to plant and grow vegetables for their cooking classes or spaces for the elderly to relax and enjoy the garden.

Outdoor learning is an essential to the design, creating a series of “outdoor classrooms,” such as the reclaimed pallet amphitheater and cut log seating circle, where children can engage with the outdoors and get their hands dirty.
