Alameda Point Waterfront Park
April Philips Design Works was recently featured in a press release regarding their work in Alameda. The Alameda Sun published an article announcing the public workshops proposed for the waterfront park and Site A development.
APDW is thrilled to be part of the team for the first development at Alameda Point – Site A, at the former Naval Air Station in Alameda, CA since its closure in 1995. The public hearing for the first phase of the Waterfront Park open space was held on January 11, 2016. click Exhibit 1 to download the entire presentation.
Located on the historic Seaplane Lagoon where the China Clipper used to launch, the design of the park engages the public with three distinct areas. The entry to the park has a focal point pavilion that will house a café, sheltered seating and restroom facilities. An overlook directed towards the spectacular views of the Bay Bridge and San Francisco beyond features a reclaimed wood deck that will be salvaged on-site. The public will approach Seaplane Lagoon with a series of planted terraces down to a promenade along the water, offering many places to sit and enjoy the tremendous views. The “Taxiway” aligns with the view corridor to San Francisco and will provide flexible space for events and intimate gatherings. It also has; a shared pedestrian and bike trail that will connect to the Alameda Bay trail, a timeline of the base’s cultural history, discovery play zones, wind turbines, and seating areas for the public. click The Alameda Environmental Report Blog for a more detailed decription of the design elements. This is the first of three phases of development for the Waterfront Park. The Waterfront Park is part of a network of public open space totaling about 20 acres. April Philips Design Works has prepared these perspectives illustrating the activities and design features for the first phase of the Waterfront Park.
