The Point Bonita YMCA is located in the Marin Headlands within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). The sustainable landscape masterplan process is underway and includes the expansion of the edible garden and the addition of outdoor classrooms, an outdoor learning kitchen, a public cafe, and the rebranding of the center’s outdoor programming opportunities. The sustainable goals envisioned with the stakeholders in the master plan process will be adapted as design strategies for the buildings and outdoor environment. These strategies will complement the GGNRA’s historical and environmental guidelines while meeting the mission of the YMCA for building strong communities. Point Bonita’s mission is to address issues of human wellness, environmental stewardship, and community engagement through an outdoor immersion program that includes educational outreach to the public. APDW is assisting the YMCA to develop a sustainability master plan that also meets and enhances the goals of the National Park Service for the GGNRA.
