The remodel of Bay Street Plaza, located in Emeryville, fulfills its vision as the community heart of the Bay Street mixed – use development. The plaza and street upgrades incorporate Bay Friendly Sustainable Guidelines as an urban ecological overlay to enhance the retail district’s appeal. Raw materials such as CorTen steel, granite, and seashells provide a cultural context to a site that was once both a steel mill and a native american shell mound. The fire pit provides a nightly gathering place of warmth and charm to keep coastal winds at bay. Elements of whimsy and delight include a solar powered fountain, shell bollards, cafes, and a circular stage terrace. Educational signage is in production and will provide visitors with more information on what makes this plaza “green”.
